El Cuyo is part of the natural reserve park
called “Rio Lagartos Reserva” and is located on a long stretched sandy
peninsula. On one side is the ocean and on the other side the lagoon
“Laguna flamingos” with thousands of pink flamingos, nesting very near
in the calm waters and other interesting wild life.
In El Cuyo you will find a very tranquil and
laid back life style similar to the island of Holbox. Most streets are
still sand. There are a few restaurants, bakery, church, an internet
café, a Golf cart- and 4-wheel moto cross-rental and many little
stores. Buses are departing on a hourly bases to Tizimin and Colonia
Yucatan with connections to Cancun, Valladolid and Merida.
Due to a recently installed radio tower you will
now be able to receive cell phone signal in El Cuyo. The locals are
friendly, respectful and hospitable. It is a very safe environment.
The beach in Puerto del Cuyo is approx 25 miles
(40 km) long and offers turquoise waters and white sand sprinkled with
a beautiful variety of shells, surrounded by palm trees, perfect for
strolling along and collecting seashells. The water is calm and
shallow, perfect for children... with no currents or undertow. From
May thru October you will be able to watch the big sea turtles laying
their eggs in the warm sand of Puerto del Cuyo and from June/July thru
September you can book a tour to swim with the giant whale sharks,
dolphins and manta rays near the island of Holbox.
